Magnificent Structure Inside Agra Fort
- Jehangir Mahal: Jehangir Mahal is one of the first pieces of architecture. As you see when entering the Agra Fort through the Amar Singh Gate, Jahangir Singh was the son of Akbar and succeeded his father as ruler of the Mughal Empire. Jahangir Mahal was built as a residence for women by Akbar and Adjacent to the room of Jodha Bai, his beloved queen, the simple Jehangir Mahal building is built of stone. And the stone jugs used to store rosewater are beautifully carved with Persian poetry.
2. Khas Mahal: Another important feature of the Agra Fort is the Khas Mahal, which has classical Persian and Islamic influences. It was inspired by Hindu patterns in its construction. These are the Emperor’s Bedrooms or ‘Araamga’. The highlight is the beautiful marble carvings.
3. Musamman Burj: To the left of Khas Mahal is the Musamman Burj, also built by Shah Jahan. This octagonal tower has an open pavilion that welcomes the cool evening breeze. It is here that Shah Jahan looked out over the tomb of his beloved wife, the Taj Mahal.
4. Sheesh Mahal: One of the most beautiful structures in Agra Fort, the Sheesh Mahal is a ‘harem’ or dressing room that uses modern water patterns. The inside of this structure is beautifully decorated with countless small mirrors. Hence the origin of the name.
5. Diwan – I- Khaas: To the right of the Sheesh Mahal is the Diwan – I – Khaas, which is a hall dedicated to individuals. It is decorated with intricate marble pillars decorated with precious gems. Next is Mamam-E-Shahi or Shah Burj used in summer.
6. Dewan-ee-am: This is a public hall. It is the location of the famous Peacock Throne. And the room that used to house the throne was decorated with white marble.
7. Nagina Mosque: This temple was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a private mosque for the ladies of his court.
8. Moti Masjid: Also known as Miracle Masjid. It is a very beautiful structure located in Agra Fort. The mosque building is currently closed to visitors. Next to the Moti Mosque is the Mina Mosque, a private temple of Emperor Shah Jahan.

History of Agra Fort
Sikandar Lodi was the first Delhi Sultan to move his capital from Delhi to Agra. His son Ibrahim Lodi held the fort, then called Badalgarh, for nine years. Until his defeat in the first battle at Panipat, when Babur sent his son Humayun to Agra, he captured the Badalgarh fort and took with him enormous treasures including the famous Kohinoor diamond.
After Humayun Sher defeated Shah Suri The Mughals again lost the fort. When Akbar arrived in Agra He realized the city’s importance and made it his capital. Akbar restored the remains of Badalgarh Fort and renovated it with red sandstone from Rajasthan. 4,000 builders worked on it and it was completed in 1573 after 8 years.
Shah Jahan, Akbar’s grandson, demolished some buildings in the fort to replace them with his own. He also built the present-day Agra Fort. Towards the end of Shah Jahan’s life, his son Aurangzeb was imprisoned in the Muasamman Burj, a fort overlooking the Taj Mahal.
